2017 NCAA Tournament Preview: Purdue Boilermakers vs. Vermont Catamounts

Game Time: 7:27 PM EST, Friday, March 17th

Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Television: TruTV

No. 4 Purdue (25-7) vs. No. 13 Vermont(29-5). Where Purdue comes in as BIG 10 regular season champs, losing in the second round of the conference tournament to Michigan. Vermont, on the other hand, has the American East player of the year Trae Bell-Haynes, was a perfect 16-0 in conference play and was the eventual American East tournament champs. They currently hold the longest active win streak in the country at 21 games, and there’s something to be said for heading into the tournament on a streak.

Key Players

  • Caleb Swanigan, Purdue The sophomore Big 10 player of the year averaging 18.5 ppg and 12.6 rebounds is the obvious headliner of a very good Purdue squad. The guy is tough to stop. He can shoot the three-pointer, makes his free throws, and at 6’9″ 250 lbs, he’s not exactly a push over either.
  • Anthony Lamb, Vermont  Lamb led Vermont in scoring (12.6) and rebounding (5.4), pretty impressive for a freshman averaging just 22.2 minutes per game. Averaging close to 20 points in his last four games, he’s heating up just at the right time. Something tells me this NCAA tournament won’t be the last we hear of Anthony Lamb.

Final Thoughts: Purdue’s size is too much for the Catamounts. With Purdue having players like Swanigan at 6’9″ and Isaac Haas at 7’2″ with Vermont’s tallest player being 6’8″, the Catamounts are going to have their hands full. Purdue has done well working the ball inside all year and I see no reason why they wouldn’t this game. Look for big numbers from size 22 foot Isaac Haas as they look to get the ball to him down low.
