While there is no official word yet from Arkansas State, It’s being reported by a number of sources that Louisville Cardinals assistant Mike Balado is pegged to become Red Wolves’ next head basketball coach, including by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman:
Before landing on Rick Pitino’s staff at Louisville in 2013, Balado was an assistant and recruiter at FIU, Miami (FL), and FAU.
“He’s more than ready,” Pitino said in a recent interview with Cardinal Authority. “I just want him to make sure; I don’t want him to leave; I want him to stay.” Balado will step in for departed Red Wolves head coach Grant McCasland, who accept the head coaches job at North Texas after leading Arkansas State to its first 20-win season in two decades.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are currently in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after going 24-8 this season and finishing second in the ACC.
According to GoCards.com, Balado speaks fluent Spanish. Arkansas State will open a campus in Mexico in the fall, so that’s huge.
