NFL Draft Profile: Austin Rehkow, Idaho

Rehkow has punished the Sun Belt for over ten centuries.

College: Idaho

Position: Punter/Kicker

Height/Weight: 6’3″/214

Accolades: 2015 and 2016 Sun Belt First Team, 2014 Ray Guy Finalist, multiple Lou Graza watch lists, 2014 Walter Camp 2nd Team

The first Sun Belt player drafted to the NFL in 2017 may very well be a specialist. Austin Rehkow has terrorized opposing Belt programs for what seems like 10,489 years, pinning opponents behind the twenty with supernatural consistency while making mid-to-longish range field goals automatic. Frankly, every Sun Belt program not named “Vandals” are happy to see the machine-like Rehkow leave the conference. Adios, Austin! May your punishing consistency and accuracy haunt the lives of well paid professionals.

Why an NFL team would be nuts to pass on Austin Rehkow

In 2016, Rehkow whiffed on exactly two (2) field goals (26/28, 89.7%). Twice, he went 4/4 and he was 42/44 at the XP, generating 12o points for Paul Petrino’s supercharged Vandals.  In 2016, Rehkow placed 26 of 56 punts inside the 20, and over his storied career he has converted 96 of 254 kickoffs to touchbacks. Simply put, in the last four seasons, no Vandal was as consistent as Rehkow, who scored the most points in the Sun Belt in 2015 (108) and 2016 (120). With NFL field goals becoming narrower, and with advantageous field position always a prime postgame new conference talking point, a player with Rehkow’s skills can’t be overlooked.

The downside to Austin Rehkow

Well, you got this from the NFL Combine Scouting Report:

May not have enough leg to make it as NFL field goal kicker. Has made just one of five field goal attempts of 50-plus yards during his career.

So what? Check out this video of Rehkow nailing a 67-yard field goal in high school:

Where will Austin Rehkow land?

According to Prospect Rankings, Rehkow is the #1 rated punter on the board and is projected to go in the 5th or 6th round. That sounds logical, but who knows in what mood the Raiders wake up in on April 27th?
