The Fiesta Miracle vs Peak MACtion
1 Boise State’s Statue of Liberty- 2007
The Boise State Broncos brought a perfectly grand end to what was a wild 2007 season in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Down a touchdown with 18 seconds remaining, the Broncos scored from midfield on fourth and 18 on the old hook-and-ladder to send the game into overtime. Oklahoma scored first but Boise State answered right back. Instead of sending the game into a second overtime, Chris Peterson had different ideas:
16 A MAC Championship Game for the ages- 2012
Its rare the two teams squaring off in the MAC title game enter the contest with 11-1 records and even more so that a spot in a BCS bowl game was reserved for the winner of one G5 game. Yet that is exactly what we got in this MACtion double overtime thriller. Jordan Lynch’s legs lead the Huskies to victory and a spot in the Orange Bowl with 160 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Pair of G5’s taking down the BIG12
8 The Cougars kick six- 2016
Midway through the third quarter of last season’s Houston-Oklahoma game, Cougar defensive back Brandon Wilson returned a kick that fell just shy of giving the Sooners a one-point lead 109 yards for a Houston touchdown. Oklahoma never recovered from the 10 point swing and dropped the season-opening contest.
9 Central Florida Knocks off Baylor- 2014
In a season of firsts, the Blake Bortles-led Knights of Central Florida won its first major bowl game with a 52-42 shootout victory over Baylor. The teams combined for 56 first downs and over 1,100 yards of offense in a game that Baylor was favored to win by 16.5.
Foreign insanity vs DOWN GOES SABAN
4 Hilltoppers top Chippewas in Bahamas- 2014
The first edition of the Bahamas Bowl was a snooze-fest through three quarters with Western Kentucky holding a 49-14 lead over Central Michigan. However, the last 15 minutes was anything but. The Chippewas mounted a fiery comeback and brought the game to within one point before the magic ran out on the Chips.
13 The Warhawks take down Nick Saban- 2007
A year removed from falling to the Crimson Tide 41-7, Louisiana-Monroe stunned Bryant-Denny Stadium with a 21-14 win over Saban’s first Alabama squad. The win gave ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie two non-conference victories that year, the only time he would accomplish the feat in his seven years at the helm.
The Sun Belt shocking the SEC (It just means more)
5 South Alabama shuts up CLANGA- 2016
Somebody forgot to let the Jaguars know they were 30 point underdogs coming into this season-opening tilt against Mississippi State. Down 17-0 in third, South Alabama scored three second half touchdowns and was gifted with a big DOINK off the left upright.
12 Louisiana-Monroe shocks college football world
Well, at least at the time. Five years after its victory over Alabama, ULM garnered its first ever win over a ranked opponent when it took down #8 Arkansas 34-31 in overtime. In hindsight, Arkansas was a searing garbage fire that season after Bobby fell off of his bike the spring before. Regardless, the Warhawks notched its Sun Belt leading second SEC win.
The voting will be done via twitter one matchup at a time. Once a winner has been decided for each of the pairings above, we will present the second half of the first round.
