Army Can Not Overcome #8 Ohio State Losing 38-7

Do not panic Army fans, that could have been a whole lot worse than it was.

In the past when Army plays “big time” teams it goes way worse than that game did, last year against a four-win Notre Dame team, they were down 38-6 at halftime. Jeff Monken has this team going in the right direction, I don’t want to see any overreaction to a loss to the eighth-ranked team in the nation.

The Black Knights didn’t start out so great, they were down 14-0 very quickly. After an Army punt, the Black Knights defense forced an Ohio State punt. The Buckeyes downed the punt at the one-yard line, Ahmad Bradshaw would have to lead a 99-yard drive in order to get a touchdown.

That is exactly what they did, Army drove down the field on the Buckeyes, it was a textbook Army football drive, the triple option was run close to perfection. When you think of Army football, you think of a drive like that, 18 plays, 9:37 off the clock and 99 yards. The drive was capped off with a Darnell Woolfolk touchdown.

Army missed another field goal, but the special teams weren’t bad, they had good punts and returner Kell Walker had several good returns.

The second half was all OSU, they outscored Army 21-0. Army just couldn’t move the ball like they were in the first half. That has a lot to do with the size difference between the D-line of OSU and the O-line of Army.

One game isn’t going to kill Army, I see them sitting pretty at 7-1, or 6-2 before the Army/Air Force game. No one overreact, no one hit the panic button just yet, Jeff Monken has this program on the up and up.

One big thing Army needs to improve on is the passing game, no I’m not saying pass every play, but the few times they do pass, they need to complete them, it will help the option run smoother.

Next up for the Black Knights is a tough road game against the Green Wave of Tulane.

  1. What is it with Monken and special teams? His kicking game always sucked at Georgia Southern too. It’s so weird, especially for a detail oriented guy like Monken who seems to always be very prepared.
