What We Learned In Week Ten of the Group of Five

Another week of churn, and not just for the Power 5 teams in the bottom of the AP poll. Also for the teams like USF, Houston and Georgia Southern who were SUPPOSED to get ranked because of that kind of churn, lost.

American Athletic Conference

USF Won’t Win Again: We all knew that the Bulls were more lucky than good, but no one saw them losing to Tulane. If you just look at the stats and not the score, you’d think the game was close. Tulane was outgained by USF 442-429, the Bulls also had more first downs. But when it came time to score, the Bulls couldn’t do it.  They gave up 7.1 yards per carry to the Green Wave. They did whatever they wanted to the USF defense.

USF has games at Cincy, at Temple, and home against UCF left and a bowl game. I don’t see how they will win any of those games if they don’t fix that defense.

Houston… Bruh… C’mon Now: We all just fought for you and said how you should have been in the CFP Top 25 and then you go and lose at SMU. I’ll give you credit for almost coming back, but you should have never been down 17-0 to SMU in the first place. Be happy you’re still in the driver’s seat in the AAC West.

Navy… What Is Going On?: The QB roulette continued as the Mids started Zach Abey, who was a QB, then a WR, then a QB again. Long story short, Navy got blanked 42-0 by Cincinnati. It will be the first time Navy won’t go to a bowl since 2011 (had a 15 year postseason streak before that), and it was their first time being shutout since 2012.

UConn, It’s Time For a New Coach: 78-87 at UConn might not seem terrible, but in the second year of his second stint with the Huskies, Randy Edsall is a combined 4-17 and 2-11 in AAC play. It’s time to meet new people, Huskies.

Conference USA

UTEP, I’m Sorry: Before the season started I predicted you to go 0-12 and start next season winless to break the record for most losses in a row. You beat Rice to snap your 18 game losing streak. Congratulations, I hope we can be friends.

UAB is in Beast Mode: Can we talk about this defense?

They’ve given up *seven* points in the second half throughout CUSA play. That’s insane. If only they didn’t slip up against Coastal Carolina. If they keep winning they might be able to sneak into the Top 25.

Army Wins Back-to-Back CIC’s: The win over Air Force this weekend gave the Black Knights back to back Commander-in-Chief Trophies for the first time in Academy history.

Liberty Gave Up How Many Yards?: 777 to be exact, and the crazy thing is, they almost won. UMass needed a touchdown with 25 seconds left to send things to overtime. Once it got to OT, the Minutemen won it on a field goal in the third OT. The game saw 121 combined points and 1,265 combined yards.

Mid-American Conference

Buffalo/Ohio on Nov. 14th is Going To Be Fun: This game is likely going to settle the MAC East. Ohio’s offense is on fire of late, they scored 45 points in the first half against Western Michigan. Buffalo is just as good with QB Tyree Jackson and WR Anthony Johnson. Johnson put up a school record 238 receiving yards against Miami (OH).

This game should be better than the actual MAC championship game, no disrespect to NIU.

Northern Illinois Will Win The West: The Huskies are 5-0 in conference and benefited from WMU’s QB going down with an injury. Barring any slip-ups, it’s NIU’s division to lose.

Mountain West Conference

Utah State Thinks They Are in NCAA 14: You know when you play NCAA 14 and you are playing with freshman difficulty and you’re one of the best teams in the game playing against FCS East in dynasty mode? Well, the Aggies are doing that in real life. They’ve dropped 117 points in their last two games. Scoring 56 against Hawaii without Jordan Love for the second half of the game was extremely impressive, I don’t care if it was against a reeling Hawaii team.

Don’t Forget About Fresno State: The Bulldogs want a shot at Utah State in the MWC Championship game. Deservedly so, they have been just as good, sure they don’t have the crazy offensive stats like USU but their defense is outstanding.

San Diego State: The Aztecs are still in contention, but in the words of our fearless leader, Nic, they are playing like they want to be “stomped” by Fresno State.

Sun Belt Conference

Georgia Southern… Bruh… Really, you too?: *Copy/Paste the first sentence of Houston but add ULM*

GASO losing to ULM is crazy, but it’s crazier when you realize that the Warhawks blew them out. At one point in the third quarter, it was 41-18.

ULM’s defense isn’t bad by any means and when you give them an extra week to prep for the triple-option I guess this is what happens.

Arkansas State Still On Pace To Win Division: The Red Wolves are 2-3 in SBC play but they only sit a game out of the lead behind ULM. The two will play on November 17th in a game that should decide the division.
