The Hottest Team No One Is Talking About: Army Men’s Basketball

The Army Black Knights went into Patriot League play sitting at 5-6. Hope seemed low for the Black Knights to do anything big this season; then it got worse.

They opened Patriot League play 0-4 and dropped to 5-10 on the season. Desperately needing a win, they played Holy Cross and ended up winning by 12 led by Matt Wilson and Tommy Funk.

The next two games were Loyola and Lafayette. Trailing by as much as 13 in the second half, Army mounted an insane comeback. Up by one with 13 seconds left, the Greyhounds would hit one of two free throws to take a two-point lead. This set up the play of the season so far for Army, Josh Caldwell faded to the corner and put up a three-point shot that hit every part of the rim and then fell with one second left on the clock and Army completed the comeback for the win.

The Lafayette game saw Army dominate from start to finish en route to a 94-74 victory.

Then came the big test, Navy. Not only was this a chance to sing second, but it was also a chance to get to .500 in conference play. Navy took a 3-0 lead to start the game and never held a lead ever again. Tommy Funk dropped 26 and led the way to a 73-66 victory over their archrivals.

With the win streak at four, they faced Bucknell. The Bison beat them by two earlier in the year, but this time, the Black Knights would not be denied a victory. Bucknell never had a lead and Army would win 68-59.

Looking to set the program record for longest win streak in Patriot League play, Funk and Matt Wilson combined for 54 points and the Black Knights won by one against Lehigh.

Army’s next game is against Boston at West Point on Wednesday. The Terriers beat them 81-59 earlier this year and are the last team to beat the Black Knights. They enter the game on a three-game win streak and are sitting at 7-3 in conference play.

An Army win would not only move their own win streak to seven, but it would also move them into a tie for second place in the conference and one game behind Colgate for first.

This is one of the biggest season turn arounds in the country and deserves a lot more attention than it’s getting.
