Forgotten 5’s Bowl Selection Extravaganza

The 2016 regular season is in the books and all we have left is the bowl season. We have some great matchup along with a few duds that make up the landscape of the 2016 bowl season. Let’s take a look at the G5 and where every bowl team is heading in the coming month.

**Superlatives are my own personal choice and NOT a consensus of the site. We may or may not come up with a site wide list later**

Bowl Selections:

  • New Mexico Bowl: UTSA (6-6, 5-3 CUSA) vs. New Mexico (8-4, 6-2 MWC)
  • Las Vegas Bowl: San Diego State (10-3, 6-2 CUSA) vs. Houston (9-3, 5-3 AAC)
  • Cure Bowl: Central Florida (6-6, 4-4 AAC) vs. Arkansas State (7-5, 7-1 Sun Belt)
  • Camellia Bowl: Appalachian State (9-3, 7-1 Sun Belt) vs. Toledo (9-3, 6-2 MAC)
  • New Orleans Bowl: Louisiana (6-6, 5-3 Sun Belt) vs. Southern Miss (6-6, 4-4 AAC)
  • Miami Beach Bowl: Tulsa (9-3, 6-2 AAC) vs. Central Michigan (6-6, 3-5 CUSA)
  • Boca Raton Bowl: Memphis (8-4, 5-3 AAC) vs. Western Kentucky (10-3, 7-1 CUSA)
  • Poinsettia Bowl: Wyoming (8-5, 6-2 MWC) vs. BYU (8-4 Independent)
  • Potato Bowl: Colorado State (7-5, 5-3 MWC) vs. Idaho (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt)
  • Bahamas Bowl: Old Dominion (9-3, 7-1 CUSA) vs. Eastern Michigan (7-5, 4-4 CUSA)
  • Armed Forces Bowl: Louisiana Tech (8-5, 6-2 CUSA) vs. #25 Navy (9-3, 7-1 AAC)
  • Dollar General Bowl: Troy (9-3, 6-2 Sun Belt) vs. Ohio (8-5, 6-2 MAC)
  • Hawaii Bowl: Middle Tennessee (8-4, 5-3 CUSA) vs. Hawaii (6-7, 4-4 MWC)
  • St. Petersburg Bowl: Miami (6-6, 6-2 MAC) vs. Mississippi State (5-7, 3-5 SEC)

  • Cactus Bowl: Boise State (10-2, 6-2 MWC) vs. Baylor (6-6, 3-6 Big 12)
  • Birmingham Bowl: South Florida (10-2, 7-1 AAC) vs. South Carolina (6-6, 3-5 SEC)
  • Arizona Bowl: South Alabama (6-6, 2-6 Sun Belt) vs. Air Force (9-3, 5-3 MWC)
  • Cotton Bowl: #15 Western Michigan (13-0, 8-0 MAC) vs. #8 Wisconsin (10-3, 7-2 Big 10)

Notes from the bowl selection process:

  • More bowls should do like the Bahamas Bowl and announce when they are ready instead of this ridiculous wait for everything to get announced at once. Good job Bahamas Bowl.
  • MTSU will be playing in a bowl game that is inaccessible for a majority of the fanbase in the Hawaii Bowl. Last year, they faced WMU in the Bahamas Bowl.
  • We only have a few games that look like potential duds. Troy/Ohio in the Dollar General Bowl, Tulsa/Central Michigan in the Miami Beach Bowl, and Army/North Texas round two in the Heart of Dallas Bowl are not ideal matchups.
  • Possibly the two best games on the entire list are Louisiana Tech/Navy and Houston/San Diego State. WKU/Memphis should be fun to watch, but we have seen that game twice already when WKU played Louisiana Tech.
  • A couple of sneaky good matchups that could be fun to watch are Wyoming/BYU and Colorado State/Idaho. Sorry east coast, the west has the upper hand.
  • Miami, Boise State, Temple, South Florida, and Western Michigan all face off versus P5 programs. Excluding 10-3 Wisconsin, the other P5 teams have a combined 23-25 record. The four G5 teams in those games are a combined 36-13.

Bowl Superlatives:

Bowl most likely to turn from 42-14 into a 56-49 2OT comeback win: Miami Beach Bowl. Tulsa has a bad habit of giving up a ton of points early and needing a mad dash at the end to pull out a win. They most recently did it in the season finale versus Cincinnati.

Bowl most likely to surpass 120 points scored: Boac Raton Bowl. Western Kentucky and Memphis are high-scoring teams that get into way too many shootouts. This game has the makings of a 69-66 game that comes close or breaks the all-time FBS scoring record set… um, a couple of weeks ago.

Bowl most likely to fail to break 10,000 in attendance: Bahamas Bowl. Nothing against either Old Dominion or Eastern Michigan, but this bowl has been one of the worst attended games in each of its first two seasons as a bowl. Don’t expect that to chance this year.

Biggest WTF matchup: Arizona Bowl. According to reports, ESPN specifically did not want Idaho in the Arizona bowl for… reasons. Instead, we get the classic matchup of Air Force and South Alabama in this game. I have a feeling USA will not sell their ticket allotment.

The worst kept secret bowl: New Orleans Bowl. When Southern Miss became bowl eligible a couple of weeks ago, anyone and everyone was certain that they would face the Ragin’ Cajuns if the Sun Belt team got that sixth win. That happened and for about ten seconds, some thought that MTSU might get the bid instead of the Golden Eagles. Haha, nope.

Jeremy’s favorite first time bowl team: Old Dominion. It came down to a couple of CUSA team and picking the Monarchs as my favorite first timer over UTSA just seemed right. Good luck to everyone that makes the trip from Norfolk to the Bahamas.
